Even though we don't own or stand a stallion of our own, if any pony could be considered our foundation stallion, it would be Lonsdale Moonwind as he was leased by and stood at the original Kohatu Stud in North Canterbury in the early 1990's.
Rebel is barely 13.2hh, but has the power and presence of a much bigger pony. It is his 'type' that we are most familiar with, and are the most keen to try and reproduce. We have heard his type referred to as 'retro', 'old fashioned', 'drafty', and 'baroque'. We just think of him as very Connemara Pony.
Rebel is almost the last of a line. His sire, Connemara Park Michael, left only four purebreds before he died - Rebel, a gelding and two mares (one mare died young, and the other has also left a short line of succession). Rebel's dam was the lovely imported mare Windward. Windward produced seven foals in New Zealand - Rebel, two purebred daughters, three geldings, and another stallion son Lonsdale Legacy who's sire could unfortunately not be proven.
Through circumstance and location, Rebel himself has produced very few purebred offspring, but has left some highly competitive partbreds. Rebel was foaled in 1981, and now has serious age related fertility issues, which is why we are exceedingly pleased to have four of his purebred daughters - three of which bear the Kohatu prefix.
Rebel has recently left a colt foal for Windward Stud, which we are all hoping will be of stallion quality.
To view some recent photo's of Rebel showing that while he may no longer be fertile, he is still very much a stallion, look here:
